The furniture distribution

The production of furniture and the distribution of furniture are two different fields. Even if some manufacturers either have their own distribution network or directly sell to the consumers, the large majority of them sell their products to retailers (specialised in furniture or not) who reach the final consumers.

As the furniture industry, the furniture distribution is quickly changing. However it is more concentrated (especially in the Northern part of Europe) than the industry. The concentration process has several forms. In addition, except Ikea and some German and French groups, the distribution is not « Europeanised ». Distributors who are making a part of their turnover in other countries than their own are scarce.

Most large retailers combine a good location and an attractive external store display, which they consider as an investment. Stocks are limited and costs related to stock management are often borne by the furniture manufacturers.

Competition in the retailing business is strong and takes three forms: direct between specialised retailers, indirect from other distribution channels and induced because of other services and goods.

It is estimated that there are about 100,000 outlets distributing furniture in the European Union (EU) and employing almost 600,000 persons.
